Ingredients:

For the Cube Steaks:

  • 4 cube steaks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for searing)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cube Steaks:
    • In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    • Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, making sure to coat both sides evenly.
  2. Sear the Cube Steaks:
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the cube steaks and sear them for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are browned. This helps to lock in the flavor.
  3. Transfer to Slow Cooker:
    • Place the seared cube steaks in the slow cooker.
  4. Prepare the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet where you seared the cube steaks, add the chopped onion and minced garlic.
    • Sauté the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes until they become translucent.
    • Sprinkle the 1/4 cup of flour over the onion and garlic and stir for another minute to create a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Continue to cook and whisk until the mixture thickens into a smooth gravy.
    • Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Pour Gravy Over Cube Steaks:
    • Pour the prepared gravy over the cube steaks in the slow cooker.
  6. Cook:
    • Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours. The cube steaks should become tender and absorb the flavors of the gravy.
  7. Serve:
    • Once the cube steaks are cooked to your satisfaction, serve them hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
    • Spoon some of the gravy over the top, and garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
