Shrimp toast is a popular Chinese appetizer that features a flavorful mixture of minced shrimp, garlic, and seasonings spread onto slices of bread and then deep-fried or baked until crispy. Here’s a simple recipe for making shrimp toast:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 pound (about 225g) raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon oyster sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4-6 slices of white bread (remove crusts if desired)
- Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
- In a food processor, combine the raw shrimp, minced garlic, chopped green onion, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Process until you have a smooth shrimp paste.
- Spread the shrimp paste evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
- If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds over the shrimp paste on the bread slices, pressing them gently to adhere.
- Cut each slice of bread into triangles or rectangles, depending on your preference.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large pan to about 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place the shrimp toast, shrimp side down, into the hot oil. Fry until the bread turns golden brown and the shrimp becomes opaque, usually 2-3 minutes per side.
- Using a slotted spoon, remove the shrimp toast from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve the shrimp toast hot, and optionally with a dipping sauce like sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce.
