Shrimp Toast

Posted on January 18, 2024

Shrimp toast is a popular Chinese appetizer that features a flavorful mixture of minced shrimp, garlic, and seasonings spread onto slices of bread and then deep-fried or baked until crispy. Here’s a simple recipe for making shrimp toast:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound (about 225g) raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4-6 slices of white bread (remove crusts if desired)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a food processor, combine the raw shrimp, minced garlic, chopped green onion, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Process until you have a smooth shrimp paste.
  2. Spread the shrimp paste evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds over the shrimp paste on the bread slices, pressing them gently to adhere.
  4. Cut each slice of bread into triangles or rectangles, depending on your preference.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large pan to about 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully place the shrimp toast, shrimp side down, into the hot oil. Fry until the bread turns golden brown and the shrimp becomes opaque, usually 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Using a slotted spoon, remove the shrimp toast from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve the shrimp toast hot, and optionally with a dipping sauce like sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce.

Enjoy your homemade shrimp toast as a delicious appetizer or snack!
