old fashioned goulash

Posted on August 20, 2023

Old-fashioned goulash is a hearty and comforting dish that’s perfect for a family dinner. It typically consists of ground beef, macaroni noodles, tomatoes, and various seasonings. Here’s a classic recipe for old-fashioned goulash:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 ounces) beef broth
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni noodles
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet or frying pan, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked beef. Sauté for a few minutes until the onion becomes translucent.
  3. Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, paprika, dried oregano, and dried basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. While the mixture is simmering, cook the elbow macaroni noodles according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain them.
  6. Add the cooked macaroni noodles to the skillet with the beef and tomato mixture. Stir everything together until it’s well combined.
  7. Cover the skillet and continue to simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the goulash is heated through and the flavors have melded together.
  8. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the goulash while it’s still hot. Cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt.
  9. Serve the old-fashioned goulash hot, garnished with additional cheese if you like.

This classic goulash recipe is a comforting and filling meal that’s perfect for a cozy family dinner. You can also customize it by adding vegetables like bell peppers or peas if you’d like. Enjoy!
