Monterey Sausage Pie

Monterey Sausage Pie is a delicious and savory dish that typically features a flaky pastry crust filled with a mixture of sausage, cheese, eggs, and other flavorful ingredients. It’s a popular dish for brunch, breakfast, or even dinner. While there may be variations of the recipe, here’s a basic recipe to give you an idea of how to make Monterey Sausage Pie:

Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 1 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

For the filling:

  • 1/2 pound (about 225 grams) ground pork or breakfast sausage
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or half-and-half
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until it’s browned and cooked through. Use a spatula to break it up into small pieces as it cooks. Once cooked, remove it from the heat and drain any excess grease.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk (or half-and-half), salt, pepper, paprika, and dried oregano (if using).
  4. Place the pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish. Crimp the edges if needed.
  5. Spread the cooked sausage evenly over the bottom of the pie crust.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese over the sausage.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the sausage and cheese.
  8. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet to catch any potential spills, and then carefully transfer it to the preheated oven.
  9. Bake for about 35-40 minutes, or until the filling is set, and the top is golden brown.
  10. Once done, remove the Monterey Sausage Pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
