Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak

Here’s a classic recipe for Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak:

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably plain)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix until just combined.
    • Form the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, add a little oil or butter. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine. Bring to a simmer.
    • If you prefer a thicker gravy, stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook until thickened.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Combine:
    • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let simmer for a few minutes to heat through.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, with the gravy poured over the top. They pair well with mashed potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables.
