Fried Green Tomatoes

Posted on November 12, 2023

Sure, here’s a simple recipe for making fried green tomatoes:

Ingredients:

  • Green tomatoes (about 4 medium-sized)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes:
    • Wash the green tomatoes and cut them into 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices.
  2. Soak in Buttermilk:
    • Place the tomato slices in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Allow them to soak for at least 30 minutes. This helps to tenderize the tomatoes and adds a tangy flavor.
  3. Prepare the Coating:
    • In a shallow dish, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
  4. Coat the Tomatoes:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Take each tomato slice from the buttermilk, letting any excess liquid drip off, and coat it in the flour-cornmeal mixture. Ensure the tomato slice is well coated on both sides.
  5. Fry the Tomatoes:
    • Carefully place the coated tomato slices in the hot oil. Fry each side until it becomes golden brown and crispy, usually about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Drain and Serve:
    • Once fried, use a slotted spoon to transfer the tomatoes to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  7. Serve:
    • Serve the fried green tomatoes hot. They can be enjoyed on their own or with a dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing or remoulade.

Enjoy your crispy and flavorful fried green tomatoes!
