cheese bacon turnovers

Posted on August 16, 2023 by admin

Cheese and bacon turnovers are delicious savory pastries typically made by encasing a filling of cheese and bacon inside a flaky pastry dough. They can be enjoyed as a snack, appetizer, or even a breakfast item. Here’s a basic recipe for making cheese and bacon turnovers:

Ingredients:

For the pastry dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/4 cup cold water

For the filling:

  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese (or any cheese of your choice)
  • 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions or chives
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the cold water, a little at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough. Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  4. While the dough is chilling, prepare the filling. In a bowl, combine the grated cheese, crumbled bacon, chopped green onions or chives, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut the dough into squares or circles, depending on your preference and the size of turnovers you want to make.
  6. Place a spoonful of the cheese and bacon filling onto one half of each dough square or circle, leaving a small border around the edges.
  7. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a triangle (if using squares) or a half-moon shape (if using circles). Press the edges firmly to seal the turnovers.
  8. Use a fork to crimp the edges of the turnovers, sealing them completely.
  9. Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown and crispy.
  11. Remove from the oven and let the turnovers cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy your delicious cheese and bacon turnovers as a tasty appetizer or snack! You can customize the filling by adding other ingredients like sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or different types of cheeses to suit your taste.
