Here’s a delicious recipe for apple dumplings!

Apple Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Dumplings:

    • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great)
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
    • 1/2 cup cold milk
    • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • For the Syrup:

    • 1 cup water
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apples:

    • Peel and core the apples, then cut them into quarters or eighths, depending on your size preference.
  2. Make the Dumpling Dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
    • Add the cold cubed butter into the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to blend the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add the cold milk and stir until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
  3. Wrap the Apples:

    • Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a square or rectangle. Cut into 4-6 squares, depending on how large you want the dumplings.
    • Place a piece of apple in the center of each dough square. Fold the dough around the apple to completely encase it. Pinch the edges together to seal.
  4. Make the Syrup:

    • In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted and the syrup is smooth.
  5. Bake the Dumplings:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Place the dumplings in a greased baking dish, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
    • Pour the syrup evenly over the dumplings, making sure they are well-covered.
    • Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the dumplings are golden brown and cooked through. You can check by inserting a toothpick into the dough—it should come out clean.
  6. Serve:

    • Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving. They are delicious on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top.
