Fried onion rings

Posted on August 31, 2023

Fried onion rings are a popular snack or side dish made from sliced onions that are coated in a batter or breading and then deep-fried until they become crispy and golden brown. They are known for their delicious flavor and crunchy texture. Here’s a basic recipe for making fried onion rings:

Ingredients:

  • Large onions
  • All-purpose flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Baking powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • Milk or buttermilk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable oil works well)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • Peel the onions and slice them into rings, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Separate the rings and set them aside.
  2. Make the Batter:
    • In a bowl, combine about 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt, and a dash of black pepper. Mix the dry ingredients together.
  3. Add Liquid:
    • Slowly pour in milk or buttermilk while stirring the dry ingredients. Mix until you have a smooth batter that is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  4. Heat the Oil:
    • Fill a deep pot or fryer with enough oil for deep frying. Heat the oil to around 350-375°F (175-190°C).
  5. Coat the Onion Rings:
    • Dip an onion ring into the batter, making sure it’s fully coated. Let any excess batter drip off.
  6. Fry the Rings:
    • Carefully place the battered onion rings into the hot oil. Fry them in small batches to avoid overcrowding the pot. Fry until they are golden brown and crispy, which usually takes about 2-3 minutes per batch.
  7. Drain and Season:
    • Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove the fried onion rings from the oil. Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. While they’re still hot, you can sprinkle a bit more salt or seasoning if desired.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve the fried onion rings immediately while they are still crispy and hot. They are often served with dipping sauces like ketchup, ranch dressing, or a spicy mayo.

Remember that working with hot oil can be dangerous, so exercise caution while frying. Additionally, you can get creative with the batter by adding various spices or even using different types of coatings like breadcrumbs for extra texture and flavor. Enjoy your homemade fried onion rings!
