Shrimp Fra Diavolo

Posted on January 18, 2024

Shrimp Fra Diavolo is a spicy Italian-American seafood dish that typically features shrimp cooked in a spicy tomato-based sauce. The name “Fra Diavolo” translates to “Brother Devil” in Italian, indicating the dish’s fiery and spicy nature. Here’s a simple recipe for Shrimp Fra Diavolo:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste for spiciness)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • Cooked pasta (linguine or spaghetti) for serving

Instructions:

  1. Season the shrimp with salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute or until fragrant.
  3. Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until they start to turn pink. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, deglaze with white wine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme, sugar, and additional salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well to combine.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  7. Add the cooked shrimp back to the skillet and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the shrimp are heated through.
  8. Stir in fresh parsley just before serving.
  9. Serve the Shrimp Fra Diavolo over cooked pasta.

You can adjust the level of spiciness by varying the amount of crushed red pepper flakes. Enjoy your delicious and spicy Shrimp Fra Diavolo!
