Here’s a hearty and flavorful Savory Cabbage Beef Bake recipe — a comforting, budget-friendly casserole packed with ground beef, tender cabbage, and a savory tomato-based sauce, all baked to perfection.


Savory Cabbage Beef Bake

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)

  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juice)

  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp paprika (optional for smoky flavor)

  • ½ tsp dried thyme or Italian seasoning

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella – optional)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter


Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.

  3. Add ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks. Cook until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.

  4. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Simmer for 5–10 minutes to let the flavors blend.

  5. In a large pot or skillet, steam or sauté the chopped cabbage with a splash of water or a bit of oil until slightly tender (about 5–7 minutes). Season lightly with salt.

  6. Layer the casserole:

    • Spread half of the cabbage in the bottom of the baking dish.

    • Top with half of the beef mixture.

    • Repeat layers with remaining cabbage and beef.

    • Sprinkle with cheese if using.

  7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes, or until bubbly and slightly browned on top.


Serving Suggestion:

Serve with crusty bread or mashed potatoes for a satisfying meal. A side of sour cream or a splash of hot sauce also pairs nicely.
