Sausage Mushroom Puffs

Posted on March 24, 2024 by admin

Sausage mushroom puffs are delicious savory pastries that combine the flavors of sausage, mushrooms, and cheese, all wrapped in a flaky pastry. Here’s a basic recipe to get you started:

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 lb (225g) sausage, casings removed
  • 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease it lightly.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until it’s browned and crumbled, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Remove excess fat if necessary. Add in the chopped mushrooms and cook until they are soft and any liquid they release has evaporated. Season with salt, pepper, and optional herbs to taste. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly to smooth out any creases. Cut the pastry sheet into squares or rectangles, depending on your preference and the size of puffs you want to make.
  4. Fill Pastry Squares: Spoon some of the sausage and mushroom mixture onto the center of each pastry square. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top of the filling.
  5. Fold and Seal: Fold the pastry squares over the filling to form triangles or rectangles, depending on the shape you cut. Use a fork to press down and seal the edges firmly.
  6. Brush with Egg Wash: Place the filled and sealed pastry puffs onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops of the puffs with beaten egg to give them a shiny golden finish when baked.
  7. Bake: Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up.
  8. Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. These sausage mushroom puffs are best enjoyed warm. They make a great appetizer or snack.

Feel free to adjust the ingredients to suit your taste preferences, adding more cheese or seasoning as desired. Enjoy your delicious sausage mushroom puffs!
