Here’s a classic soft sandwich bread recipe — perfect for toast, sandwiches, or just slathered with butter.


🍞 Soft Sandwich Bread Recipe

Yields: 1 loaf (9×5-inch pan)
Prep time: 15 min (plus rising)
Bake time: 30–35 min


✅ Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups (420g) all-purpose flour or bread flour

  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)

  • 2 tbsp (25g) sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp (30g) unsalted butter, softened

  • Optional: 1 egg for brushing the top (egg wash)


🥣 Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast
    In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir in the yeast and let sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.

  2. Mix the dough
    In a large bowl (or stand mixer), combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and softened butter. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. Knead
    Knead by hand on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes, or in a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5–6 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

  4. First rise
    Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

  5. Shape the loaf
    Punch down the dough and shape into a log. Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

  6. Second rise
    Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until puffy and just above the rim of the pan.

  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)

  8. Bake
    Brush the top with egg wash if desired for a golden crust. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.

  9. Cool
    Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
