Salted Caramel Turtle Fudge Bars

Salted Caramel Turtle Fudge Bars are a delightful treat combining the rich flavors of chocolate, caramel, and nuts. Here’s a simple recipe to make them:

Ingredients:

For the Base:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Caramel Layer:

  • 1 (14 ounces) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Sea salt flakes for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Base:
    • In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
    • Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  3. Bake the Base:
    • Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the base is set. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
  4. Prepare the Caramel Layer:
    • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sweetened condensed milk, butter, and brown sugar.
    • Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and turns golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Pour the caramel evenly over the cooled base layer.
  5. Top with Chocolate and Nuts:
    • Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the caramel layer while it’s still warm.
    • Allow the chocolate chips to melt slightly, then spread them evenly over the caramel layer with a spatula.
    • Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the melted chocolate layer.
    • Lightly sprinkle sea salt flakes over the top for that perfect salty-sweet balance.
  6. Chill and Serve:
    • Place the pan in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until the bars are completely set.
    • Once set, remove from the refrigerator and cut into squares or bars.
