Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Posted on September 26, 2023

Salisbury steak with onion gravy is a classic comfort food dish that consists of seasoned ground beef patties served with a rich onion gravy. Here’s a recipe to make Salisbury steak with onion gravy:

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef (preferably lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Making the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Mix the ingredients until well combined, but try not to overwork the meat, as it can make the patties tough.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4-6 portions and shape them into oval or round patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Carefully add the patties to the hot skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are nicely browned and cooked through. Transfer the cooked patties to a plate and cover them with foil to keep warm.

Making the Onion Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook the onions over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir well to combine. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes to remove the raw taste of the flour.
  3. Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Taste the gravy and season with salt and black pepper as needed.

Serving:

  1. Place the Salisbury steak patties back into the skillet with the onion gravy, allowing them to heat through for a few minutes.
  2. Serve the Salisbury steak with onion gravy over cooked egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or rice. You can also serve it with steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired, and enjoy your homemade Salisbury steak with onion gravy!
