Philly Cheese Steak Casserole

Posted on August 28, 2023

Philly Cheese Steak Casserole is a flavorful dish inspired by the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It typically includes thinly sliced beef, sautéed vegetables, and melted cheese, all baked together in a casserole dish. This version offers all the delicious flavors of a traditional Philly cheesesteak in an easy-to-make casserole format. Here’s a basic recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (such as ribeye or sirloin)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded provolone or American cheese
  • 4 sub rolls or hoagie rolls, cut into chunks

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms. Sauté until the vegetables are softened and slightly caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced beef and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder to create the sauce.
  5. Place the chunks of sub rolls in the prepared baking dish to form a bottom layer.
  6. Layer the sautéed vegetables over the bread chunks.
  7. Spread the cooked beef over the vegetables.
  8. Drizzle the sauce over the beef and vegetables.
  9. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
  10. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.
  13. Serve the Philly Cheese Steak Casserole in individual portions, using a spatula to scoop out a mixture of the cheesy beef and vegetables onto plates.

This casserole offers all the flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak but in a convenient and shareable format. It’s perfect for a family dinner or potluck gathering. Feel free to customize the ingredients to your taste preferences, and enjoy the hearty and satisfying flavors of this dish.
