Onion and Cumin Beef Stir-fry Recipe

Posted on December 27, 2024 by admin
Here’s a simple and flavorful recipe for an Onion and Cumin Beef Stir-fry:

Ingredients:

  • 300g (10 oz) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for stir-frying)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes or fresh chili, finely sliced (optional for spice)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional for added umami)
  • 1 teaspoon honey or sugar (to balance flavors)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro (for garnish)
  • Lime wedges (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef:
    • Slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness. If the beef is too thick, it can be placed in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to firm up for easier slicing.
  2. Marinate the Beef (Optional):
    • In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of cumin, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Let it marinate for 10-15 minutes for added flavor (you can skip this step if you’re short on time).
  3. Stir-Fry the Beef:
    • Heat a wok or a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the beef slices in a single layer and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
  4. Cook the Onions:
    • In the same pan, add another tablespoon of oil (if necessary), and add the sliced onions. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they become soft and translucent.
    • Add the minced garlic, ground cumin, and optional ground coriander and chili flakes. Stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Combine:
    • Return the beef to the pan. Stir everything together and cook for another minute or two.
    • Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), and honey (or sugar). Stir well to combine, allowing the sauce to coat the beef and onions evenly.
  6. Serve:
    • Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt, pepper, or soy sauce if necessary.
    • Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve immediately with steamed rice or flatbreads, and lime wedges on the side for an extra zing.

Enjoy your delicious Onion and Cumin Beef Stir-fry!
