Here’s a classic recipe for old-fashioned frikadeller, a Danish meatball dish:
Ingredients:
- 500g ground pork (you can also use a mix of pork and beef)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1-2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 3-4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons of milk
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground allspice
- A pinch of nutmeg
- Butter or oil for frying
Instructions:
- Prepare the Mixture:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix everything together until well combined. You can use your hands for this step.
- Form the Meatballs:
- With slightly damp hands, shape the mixture into small meatballs. You can make them whatever size you prefer, but traditionally they’re about the size of golf balls.
- Cooking:
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a knob of butter or a bit of oil.
- Once the skillet is hot, add the meatballs in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook them for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. You may need to adjust the heat to prevent burning.
- Serve:
- Once cooked, remove the meatballs from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Serve the frikadeller hot with your favorite sides. They’re traditionally served with boiled potatoes, gravy, and lingonberry jam.
