Here’s a delicious Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie with Golden Meringue recipe — rich, silky, and topped with a fluffy, golden-browned meringue just like Grandma used to make!


🥧 Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie with Golden Meringue

Ingredients

For the Pie Filling:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 3 large egg yolks (reserve whites for meringue)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

For the Meringue:

  • 3 large egg whites

  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar

  • 6 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract


Instructions

1. Prepare the Filling:

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt.

  2. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.

  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture begins to bubble and thicken.

  4. In a small bowl, beat the egg yolks. Slowly whisk in a spoonful of the hot chocolate mixture to temper, then add yolks into the saucepan, whisking quickly.

  5. Cook for another 2–3 minutes, until thick and glossy.

  6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and butter until melted and smooth.

  7. Pour filling into the pre-baked pie crust.

2. Make the Meringue:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a clean bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until foamy.

  3. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff glossy peaks form.

  4. Beat in vanilla extract.

3. Top and Bake:

  1. Spread meringue over the hot pie filling, sealing it to the edges of the crust to prevent shrinking.

  2. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until meringue is golden brown.

  3. Cool at room temperature, then chill at least 2 hours before slicing.
