Posted on June 17, 2025

Here’s a rich and creamy Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie recipe just like Grandma used to make—perfect for any chocolate lover!

Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 3 large egg yolks

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Crust:

  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Optional Topping:

  • Whipped cream or meringue

Instructions:

  1. Pre-Bake the Crust:

    • Pre-bake your 9-inch pie crust according to package or recipe instructions. Let it cool.

  2. Make the Filling:

    • In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt.

    • In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks and add the milk. Gradually whisk the wet mixture into the dry ingredients in the saucepan.

    • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble (about 10–12 minutes).

    • Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.

  3. Fill the Pie:

    • Pour the hot chocolate filling into the pre-baked pie shell. Smooth the top with a spatula.

  4. Cool and Set:

    • Let the pie cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until set.

  5. Serve:

    • Top with whipped cream or meringue if desired. Slice and enjoy chilled!
