Meatball Sub Casserole Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Meatballs:
    • 1 lb ground beef
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • For the Casserole:
    • 1 loaf Italian or French bread, sliced into 1-inch thick slices
    • 1/4 cup butter, melted
    • 1 tsp garlic powder
    • 2 cups marinara sauce
    • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Make the Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
    • Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Bread Base:
    • Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Brush the bread slices with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder.
    • Toast the bread in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until lightly golden and crisp.
  4. Assemble the Casserole:
    • Remove the toasted bread from the oven.
    • Spread 1 cup of marinara sauce over the toasted bread slices.
    • Arrange the cooked meatballs evenly over the sauce-covered bread.
    • Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the meatballs.
    • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  5. Bake the Casserole:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
    • If desired, broil for the last 2-3 minutes to get the cheese extra golden and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes.
    • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
    • Serve hot and enjoy your Meatball Sub Casserole!

Tips:

  • You can use store-bought meatballs to save time.
  • For a spicier version, add some red pepper flakes to the marinara sauce.
  • This casserole pairs well with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables.

Enjoy your delicious Meatball Sub Casserole!
