maryland crab cakes

Posted on January 20, 2024 by admin

Maryland crab cakes are a popular dish that originated in the state of Maryland, USA. They are made using blue crab meat, a species of crab commonly found in the Chesapeake Bay. Here’s a basic recipe for making Maryland crab cakes:

Ingredients:

  1. 1 pound of fresh lump crab meat (make sure to check for any shells)
  2. 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  3. 1 large egg
  4. 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  5. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  6. 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (a traditional Maryland spice blend)
  7. 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  8. 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plus extra for coating)
  9. Salt and pepper to taste
  10. Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, gently pick through the crab meat to remove any shells or cartilage. Be careful not to break up the lumps too much.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay seasoning, lemon juice, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper.
  3. Gently fold the crab meat into the mayonnaise mixture until well combined. Be careful not to overmix to maintain the lumpiness of the crab meat.
  4. Cover the mixture and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Chilling helps the crab cakes hold their shape during cooking.
  5. After chilling, shape the mixture into crab cakes, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. You can make them smaller for appetizers or larger for main courses.
  6. Coat each crab cake in additional breadcrumbs, pressing them lightly onto the surface.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the crab cakes for about 4-5 minutes per side or until they are golden brown and heated through.
  8. Once cooked, place the crab cakes on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
  9. Serve the Maryland crab cakes with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or a remoulade, and enjoy!

These crab cakes are known for their rich flavor and the use of Old Bay seasoning, which adds a distinctive taste to the dish. Adjust the seasoning and other ingredients according to your preferences.
