Ingredients:

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 pound (450 grams) ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your preferred cheese)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil for sautéing

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Cabbage:
    • Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces, removing the tough core.
  3. Brown the Ground Meat:
    • In a large skillet, heat a bit of cooking oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for a couple of minutes until they become translucent.
    • Add the ground meat (beef or turkey) to the skillet. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until it’s browned and cooked through. Season with salt, pepper, dried oregano, and dried basil. Drain any excess fat if needed.
  4. Mix the Creamy Sauce:
    • In a separate bowl, combine the drained diced tomatoes, sour cream, mayonnaise, and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Mix well to form a creamy sauce.
  5. Assemble the Casserole:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ground meat mixture and the chopped cabbage. Mix everything together so that the cabbage is evenly distributed.
    • Pour the creamy sauce mixture over the meat and cabbage mixture. Stir until everything is well coated.
  6. Bake:
    • Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish.
    • Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Serve:
    • Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives if desired.
