Homemade sausage rolls

Homemade sausage rolls are a classic and delicious snack or appetizer that’s perfect for parties, picnics, or a tasty treat any time. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own sausage rolls:

Ingredients:

For the Sausage Filling:

  • 1 pound (450g) ground pork sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Pastry:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped onion (and minced garlic, if using) until it becomes translucent and slightly caramelized. This should take about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow it to cool.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork sausage, cooked onion (and garlic), dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to a rectangle that’s approximately 12×16 inches (30×40 cm).
  5. Cut the pastry sheet in half lengthwise, creating two long strips.
  6. Divide the sausage mixture into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a long sausage-like log, placing it along the center of each pastry strip.
  7. Brush the edges of the pastry strips with beaten egg. Fold the pastry over the sausage filling, sealing it along the edge. Press down gently to seal the seam.
  8. Cut each long sausage roll into smaller pieces, about 2 inches (5 cm) wide.
  9. Place the sausage rolls on the prepared baking sheet, seam side down. Brush the tops with more beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown, and the sausage is cooked through.
  11. Remove the sausage rolls from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
  12. Enjoy your homemade sausage rolls warm or at room temperature. They are great on their own or served with ketchup, mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce.
