Posted on January 20, 2024

Certainly! Here’s a recipe for a homemade German Chocolate Cake:

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Coconut Pecan Frosting:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a heatproof bowl, combine the chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, and boiling water. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Allow it to cool slightly.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in the melted chocolate mixture until well incorporated.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.

For the Coconut Pecan Frosting:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine evaporated milk, sugar, beaten egg yolks, and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens (about 10-12 minutes).
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans. Allow the frosting to cool to room temperature.

Assembling the Cake:

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of the coconut pecan frosting on top.
  2. Add the second cake layer and frost the top with more coconut pecan frosting.
  3. Place the final cake layer on top and frost the top and sides with the remaining frosting.
  4. Optionally, you can decorate the top with additional pecans or chocolate shavings.
  5. Slice and enjoy your homemade German Chocolate Cake!
