Homemade Country Gravy

Posted on March 3, 2024 by admin

Here’s a simple recipe for homemade country gravy:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of fat (you can use drippings from cooked sausage or bacon, or butter)
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat the fat in a skillet over medium heat. If you’re using bacon or sausage drippings, make sure to keep any crispy bits in the skillet as they add flavor to the gravy.
  2. Once the fat is hot, gradually sprinkle in the flour, stirring constantly to combine. Cook the flour and fat mixture (called a roux) for a few minutes until it turns a light golden brown color. This helps to cook out the raw flavor of the flour.
  3. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens to your desired consistency. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Remember that if you used bacon or sausage drippings, they may already add some saltiness to the gravy, so adjust accordingly.
  5. Once the gravy has thickened and seasoned to your liking, remove it from the heat and serve hot over biscuits, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, or any other dish you prefer.

Enjoy your homemade country gravy!
