Here’s a simple recipe for handcrafted crispy pastries that you can enjoy as a delightful treat!

Ingredients

For the Pastry:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into small cubes)
  • 1/4 cup ice water

For the Filling (choose one or mix):

  • Fruit Filling: 1 cup chopped apples or berries, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • Savory Filling: 1 cup cooked and seasoned meat (like chicken or beef), or sautéed vegetables with cheese

For Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg (beaten with 1 tablespoon water)

Instructions

  1. Make the Pastry:
    • In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
    • Add the cold butter cubes. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add ice water, a tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overwork it.
    • Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • For fruit filling, toss the chopped fruit with sugar and cinnamon.
    • For savory filling, combine cooked meat or vegetables with cheese and season to taste.
  3. Roll Out the Dough:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/8-inch thick.
    • Cut into desired shapes (triangles, circles, etc.).
  4. Assemble the Pastries:
    • Place a tablespoon of filling in the center of each cut-out dough.
    • Fold over and seal the edges with a fork or by crimping with your fingers.
    • Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Apply Egg Wash:
    • Brush the tops of the pastries with the egg wash for a golden finish.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the pastries cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.
