🍲 Hamburger Macaroni and Cheese
🕒 Ready in 30 minutes | 🍽 Serves 4–6
Ingredients:
-
1 lb ground beef
-
1 small onion, diced
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
2 cups elbow macaroni (or any short pasta)
-
2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
-
1 cup beef broth (or water with bouillon)
-
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
-
½ tsp paprika
-
½ tsp mustard powder (optional, for extra flavor)
-
Salt & pepper, to taste
-
Fresh parsley or green onions (optional garnish)
Instructions:
-
Cook pasta:
In a large pot, cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside. -
Brown the beef:
In the same pot or a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. -
Sauté aromatics:
Add the diced onion and garlic to the beef and cook for 2–3 minutes until softened. -
Make the roux:
Push the meat to one side of the pan. Melt butter in the empty space, then sprinkle in the flour. Stir constantly for 1–2 minutes until a paste forms and begins to turn golden. -
Add liquids:
Gradually whisk in the milk and beef broth, stirring to combine with the roux. Mix everything together with the beef. -
Make it cheesy:
Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 4–5 minutes, until thickened slightly. Stir in 2 cups of the shredded cheese, paprika, and mustard powder. Mix until smooth. -
Combine:
Add the cooked macaroni back into the pot and stir to coat evenly with the cheese sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. -
Optional step – broil for cheesy top:
If you want a baked finish, transfer the mixture to a baking dish, sprinkle with remaining ½ cup cheese, and broil for 2–3 minutes until bubbly and golden. -
Serve:
Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions if desired. Serve hot!
✅ Tips & Variations:
