Cheese Potato & Smoked Sausage Casserole

Posted on March 30, 2024 by admin

Cheese, Potato, and Smoked Sausage Casserole is a delicious and hearty dish perfect for satisfying hungry appetites. Here’s a basic recipe you can follow:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced into rounds
  • 4-5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until they become translucent and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the sliced smoked sausage rounds to the skillet and cook until they start to brown slightly, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. In a small saucepan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden brown.
  5. Gradually whisk in the chicken or vegetable broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Once the mixture thickens, stir in the milk or heavy cream. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce is smooth and thickened.
  6. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the cooked sausage mixture and sprinkle with a third of the shredded cheese.
  8. Pour half of the prepared sauce over the cheese and sausage layer.
  9. Repeat the layers, starting with another layer of sliced potatoes, followed by the remaining sausage mixture, another third of the shredded cheese, and the remaining sauce.
  10. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  11. Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese over the top of the casserole. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Enjoy your delicious Cheese, Potato, and Smoked Sausage Casserole!
