Buttermilk Cornbread

Posted on January 17, 2024

Certainly! Buttermilk cornbread is a classic Southern dish that’s easy to make and pairs well with various meals. Here’s a simple recipe for you:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a cast-iron skillet or a baking dish with a bit of butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and eggs until well combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  5. Stir in the melted butter and mix until evenly incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared skillet or baking dish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cornbread to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Serve the buttermilk cornbread as a side dish with chili, soup, barbecue, or any meal of your choice. It’s delicious on its own or with a pat of butter and a drizzle of honey. Enjoy!
