Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Posted on July 4, 2025 by admin

Here’s a classic Black folks’ sweet potato pie recipe — rich, spiced, creamy, and baked in a buttery crust. It’s a beloved soul food dessert, often served during holidays or Sunday dinners.

Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie

🥧 Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 large sweet potatoes, baked or boiled and peeled)

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup packed brown sugar

  • 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, melted

  • ½ cup evaporated milk

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger (optional)

  • Pinch of salt

For the crust:

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch deep-dish pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

🧑🏽‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Prepare sweet potatoes:

    • Bake or boil sweet potatoes until soft, then peel and mash until smooth. You can use a hand mixer for extra creaminess.

  3. Make the filling:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, both sugars, melted butter, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla, spices, and salt.

    • Mix until well-blended and smooth.

  4. Fill the crust:

    • Pour the sweet potato mixture into the unbaked pie shell. Smooth the top with a spatula.

  5. Bake:

    • Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until the center is set (a toothpick should come out mostly clean).

    • If the crust starts to brown too much, loosely cover the edges with foil halfway through baking.

  6. Cool and serve:

    • Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

    • Serve plain or topped with whipped cream.
