Bioplastic Suncatchers

Posted on June 22, 2025

Bioplastic Suncatchers are a fun and eco-friendly DIY craft made from homemade bioplastic β€” a biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based plastics β€” typically using ingredients like cornstarch or gelatin. When dried, these suncatchers become translucent and can be colored to beautifully catch and filter sunlight.

Here’s how to make your own Bioplastic Suncatchers:

🌞 DIY Bioplastic Suncatchers Recipe

πŸ§‚ Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon gelatin (unflavored)

  • 3 tablespoons water

  • 1 teaspoon glycerin (for flexibility; available at pharmacies)

  • Food coloring or natural dyes

  • Glitter, flower petals, or pressed leaves (optional)

  • Plastic lids, silicone molds, or cookie cutters (as molds)

πŸ› οΈ Tools:

  • Small saucepan

  • Spoon for stirring

  • Paintbrushes (optional)

  • Parchment paper or wax paper for drying surface

πŸ”¬ Instructions:

  1. Make the Bioplastic Mixture:

    • In a small saucepan, mix the gelatin and water.

    • Heat gently over low heat while stirring constantly.

    • Add glycerin and continue stirring until fully dissolved and slightly thickened (about 3–5 minutes).

    • Remove from heat.

  2. Add Color & Decor:

    • Stir in food coloring.

    • Pour into plastic lids or onto wax paper in fun shapes.

    • You can sprinkle glitter, add small dried flowers, or swirl multiple colors for effect.

  3. Shape Your Suncatchers:

    • Use cookie cutters to create shapes, or pour into molds.

    • Use a straw to poke a small hole for hanging before the mixture dries.

  4. Let Dry:

    • Leave undisturbed for 1–3 days, depending on thickness and humidity.

    • Once dry, carefully peel off your suncatcher.

  5. Hang in the Sun!

    • Thread string or fishing line through the hole.

    • Hang in a sunny window and enjoy the natural glow 🌈
