Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) penne pasta
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (24 oz) jar marinara sauce (or homemade sauce)
  • 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes (optional, for extra texture)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Cook the Penne Pasta:

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente (usually about 9-11 minutes). Drain and set aside.

2. Prepare the Beef Sauce:

  • In a large skillet or pan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. This should take about 8-10 minutes.
  • Drain any excess fat from the beef.
  • Stir in the marinara sauce, diced tomatoes (if using), basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

3. Combine the Pasta and Sauce:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta and beef sauce. Stir to coat the pasta evenly in the sauce.

4. Assemble the Bake:

  • Transfer the pasta mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the top with shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil.

5. Bake:

  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • For a golden, crispy top, remove the foil during the last 5 minutes of baking.

6. Serve:

  • Once the pasta is baked, remove it from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley, if desired.
  • Serve hot and enjoy!

This baked penne pasta with beef and mozzarella makes for a comforting, hearty meal that’s perfect for family dinners or gatherings. You can also add veggies like bell peppers or mushrooms to the sauce if you’d like!
