Amish baked custard

Posted on May 16, 2024March 25, 2025 by admin

Sure! Here’s a simple recipe for Amish baked custard:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Place a large baking dish filled with water on the bottom rack of the oven. This will create a water bath for the custard.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs slightly. Add sugar and continue beating until well combined.
  3. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling. Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt.
  5. Pour the mixture into custard cups or ramekins. Place the cups in a larger baking dish or roasting pan.
  6. Carefully transfer the baking dish or roasting pan to the oven, placing it on the rack above the water-filled baking dish.
  7. Bake for about 45-50 minutes or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  8. Remove the custard from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  9. Optionally, sprinkle additional nutmeg on top before serving.

Enjoy your delicious Amish baked custard!
