Vanilla Custard Cream Squares

Here’s a recipe for Vanilla Custard Cream Squares:

Ingredients:

For the Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

For the Custard Filling:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

For the Whipped Cream Topping:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Crust:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, powdered sugar, and salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×9-inch baking pan lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake the crust for 15-18 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let it cool.

2. Make the Custard Filling:

  • In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, salt, and egg yolks until smooth.
  • Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
  • Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until the custard thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove the custard from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until smooth.
  • Pour the custard over the cooled crust and spread it evenly.
  • Cover with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap directly onto the surface of the custard to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until the custard is fully set.

3. Prepare the Whipped Cream Topping:

  • In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  • Spread the whipped cream over the chilled custard layer.

4. Serve:

  • Cut the custard squares into pieces and serve chilled.
