Sausage, Gravy, and Biscuit Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the Sausage Gravy:
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for a bit of heat
- For the Biscuit Topping:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Prepare the Sausage Gravy:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and cooked through, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Cook for about 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens.
- Season with salt, black pepper, and optional cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the Biscuit Topping:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
- Assemble the Pie:
- Pour the sausage gravy into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Drop spoonfuls of the biscuit dough over the top of the gravy, covering as much of the surface as possible. It’s okay if there are gaps; the biscuits will expand as they bake.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve:
- Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your hearty and comforting sausage, gravy, and biscuit pie!
