Turkish Pide Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- For the Topping:
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tbsp yogurt
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Sesame seeds
- Nigella seeds (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Pide:
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
- On a floured surface, roll out each ball into an oval or round shape, about ½ inch thick.
- Prepare the Topping:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk, yogurt, and olive oil.
- Assemble the Pide:
- Transfer the shaped dough onto a piece of parchment paper or a baking sheet lined with parchment.
- Brush the top of each dough with the egg mixture. Using your fingers or the back of a spoon, create a crisscross pattern on the surface of the dough.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds and nigella seeds over the top.
- Bake:
- Carefully transfer the parchment paper with the dough onto the preheated pizza stone or directly place the baking sheet in the oven.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the pide is golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve:
- Allow the pide to cool slightly before slicing and serving. Enjoy it warm with dips, cheeses, or as a side to your favorite meal.
Tips:
- For extra flavor, you can add some garlic powder or dried herbs to the dough.
- If you don’t have a pizza stone, you can use an inverted baking sheet preheated in the oven.
