Classic Tres Leches Cake

Here’s a classic Tres Leches Cake recipe for you to enjoy. This deliciously moist and creamy cake is a favorite in many Latin American countries and perfect for any celebration.

Tres Leches Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 5 large eggs, separated
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Tres Leches Mixture:
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (or heavy cream)
For the Whipped Cream Topping:
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Prepare the Cake Batter:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks with 3/4 cup of the granulated sugar until the mixture is thick and pale yellow. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
    • Gently fold the flour mixture into the egg yolk mixture until combined.
    • In a separate large bowl, beat the egg whites on high speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar and continue to beat until stiff peaks form.
    • Gently fold the egg whites into the batter just until combined.
  3. Bake the Cake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
    • Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  4. Prepare the Tres Leches Mixture:
    • In a large measuring cup or bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk.
  5. Soak the Cake:
    • Once the cake has cooled, poke holes all over the top with a fork or a skewer.
    • Slowly pour the tres leches mixture over the entire cake, allowing it to soak in.
    • Cover the cake and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  6. Prepare the Whipped Cream Topping:
    • In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract on high speed until stiff peaks form.
    • Spread the whipped cream evenly over the cake.
  7. Serve:
    • Slice the cake into squares and serve. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, you can sprinkle ground cinnamon on top of the whipped cream.
  • Fresh fruits like strawberries or mangoes make a great garnish.
