Here’s a classic recipe for Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy. It’s a comforting, hearty dish that’s perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix until well combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Salisbury Steaks:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil.
    • Add the patties to the skillet and cook until browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
    • Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Mushroom Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add butter and let it melt.
    • Add the sliced mushrooms and chopped onion, cooking until they are softened and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to combine, and cook for another 2 minutes.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard if using.
    • Let the gravy simmer until it thickens, about 5 minutes.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each one.
    • Let them simmer in the gravy for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with the mushroom gravy poured over the top.
