Sweet onion pie is a delicious savory pie typically made with caramelized onions, eggs, cream, cheese, and seasonings, all baked in a pie crust. It’s a popular dish in Southern cuisine, known for its rich, savory-sweet flavor profile. Here’s a basic recipe to make sweet onion pie:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 4 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as Gruyere, cheddar, or Swiss)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for added flavor

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out the pie crust and press it into a pie dish. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream until well combined.
  5. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the bottom of the pie crust.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the onions.
  7. Pour the egg and cream mixture over the onions and cheese.
  8. Optional: sprinkle fresh herbs on top for added flavor.
  9. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet (to catch any drips) and bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  10. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
