Ingredients:

  • 1 medium-sized cabbage, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or bacon grease
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes for some heat
  • Optional: Cooked and crumbled bacon for added flavor

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cabbage:
    • Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut it in half. Remove the core, and then thinly slice or shred the cabbage.
  2. Saute Onion and Garlic:
    • Heat vegetable oil or bacon grease in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add sliced onions and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onions are softened and translucent.
  3. Add Cabbage:
    • Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet. Toss the cabbage to combine it with the onions and garlic.
  4. Season:
    • Season the cabbage with salt, black pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
  5. Cook:
    • Cook the cabbage over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Allow it to cook until the cabbage is tender but still has a bit of crunch. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Optional Bacon:
    • If you’re using bacon, cook it separately until crispy. Crumble the bacon and add it to the fried cabbage just before serving.
  7. Serve:
    • Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, remove the skillet from heat. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
    • Serve the fried cabbage hot as a side dish. It pairs well with grilled meats, sausages, or as a simple and flavorful side.
