Certainly! One delicious and popular Hungarian chicken dish is “Paprikás Csirke” or Chicken Paprikash. It’s a flavorful and comforting dish with a rich, creamy sauce. Here’s a simple recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 kg (about 3.3 lbs) chicken, cut into serving pieces
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon hot paprika (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
  • Egg noodles or rice for serving

Instructions:

  1. Season the Chicken:
    • Season the chicken pieces with salt, pepper, and a tablespoon of sweet paprika.
  2. Sear the Chicken:
    • In a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Brown the chicken pieces on all sides. Once browned, remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onions and Garlic:
    • In the same skillet, add the chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent. Add the minced garlic and continue cooking for another minute.
  4. Add Paprika:
    • Stir in the sweet and hot paprika to the onion and garlic mixture. This gives the dish its distinctive flavor and color.
  5. Deglaze with Broth:
    • Pour in the chicken broth to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
  6. Simmer the Chicken:
    • Return the browned chicken pieces to the skillet, cover, and simmer over medium heat until the chicken is cooked through, about 25-30 minutes.
  7. Make the Sour Cream Mixture:
    • In a bowl, mix the sour cream and flour until smooth. Slowly add a ladle of the hot liquid from the skillet to the sour cream mixture, stirring constantly to prevent curdling.
  8. Thicken the Sauce:
    • Gradually pour the sour cream mixture back into the skillet, stirring continuously. Cook over low heat until the sauce thickens.
  9. Adjust Seasoning:
    • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if necessary.
  10. Serve:
    • Serve the Chicken Paprikash over cooked egg noodles or rice. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
