Firehouse Green Beans

Posted on September 18, 2025 by admin

Firehouse Green Beans are a savory, smoky, and slightly spicy twist on traditional green beans—often associated with hearty firehouse cooking. They’re typically made with bacon, onion, and sometimes a little heat (like red pepper flakes or hot sauce) to give them that bold, comforting flavor.

Here’s a classic Firehouse Green Beans recipe you can try:

🔥 Firehouse Green Beans Recipe

🧄 Ingredients:

  • 1½ lbs fresh green beans, trimmed (or 2 cans of cut green beans, drained)

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced

  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to heat preference)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional, for balance)

  • ½ cup chicken broth or water (for simmering)

  • Dash of hot sauce (optional)

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the grease in the pan.

  2. Sauté onion in the bacon grease until soft and translucent, about 4–5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.

  3. Add green beans to the pan. Stir to coat in the bacon fat, onion, and garlic.

  4. Season with red pepper flakes, black pepper, and salt. Add brown sugar if using.

  5. Pour in chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for:

    • 10–15 minutes for fresh green beans (until tender)

    • 5–7 minutes for canned green beans (just to heat and blend flavors)

  6. Uncover, stir in cooked bacon, and simmer a few more minutes until most of the liquid is reduced.

  7. Finish with a dash of hot sauce if desired. Serve hot!
