Old fashioned cake donuts

Here’s a classic Old-Fashioned Cake Donuts recipe — crisp edges, tender crumb, and that nostalgic flavor:


🍩 Old-Fashioned Cake Donuts

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups (280g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg (optional, classic flavor!)

  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 large egg yolks

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) sour cream

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the glaze (optional):

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 2–3 tbsp milk

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract


Instructions:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.

  2. Cream Butter & Sugar:
    In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until sandy. Add egg yolks and beat until light and thick.

  3. Combine Wet Ingredients:
    Add sour cream and vanilla. Mix well.

  4. Form Dough:
    Add dry ingredients to wet and mix until just combined. Dough will be sticky.

  5. Chill:
    Wrap dough in plastic and chill for 1 hour (this makes it easier to handle).

  6. Roll & Cut:
    Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut with a donut cutter or two round cutters (about 3” and 1”).

  7. Heat Oil:
    Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a heavy pot to 325°F (165°C).

  8. Fry:
    Fry a few donuts at a time, about 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown. Don’t overcrowd.

  9. Drain:
    Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack over paper towels.

  10. Glaze (optional):
    Whisk glaze ingredients until smooth. Dip warm donuts in glaze and let set.
