Here’s a classic Southern-style homemade biscuit recipe that’s buttery, fluffy, and perfect for breakfast or any meal:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk (plus extra for brushing)


Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Mix dry ingredients:
    In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).

  3. Cut in butter:
    Add cold butter cubes. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs (pea-sized bits of butter throughout).

  4. Add buttermilk:
    Slowly pour in the buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together. Don’t overmix!

  5. Knead gently:
    Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Gently pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Fold the dough over itself 2-3 times (this helps create layers). Pat it out again to 1-inch thickness.

  6. Cut biscuits:
    Use a floured biscuit cutter or glass to cut out biscuits. Press straight down—don’t twist! Place biscuits close together on the baking sheet for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier edges.

  7. Brush tops & bake:
    Brush the tops with buttermilk or melted butter. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

  8. Serve warm with butter, jam, honey, or gravy!
