Crispy Amish Onion Fritters

🧅 Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions, finely chopped or thinly sliced

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp cornmeal (optional, for extra crunch)

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp paprika (optional for flavor)

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup milk (adjust for consistency)

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)


🔪 Instructions:

  1. Prep the Onions
    Peel and finely chop or thinly slice the onions. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

  2. Mix the Batter
    In a large bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. Add the egg and milk. Mix until you get a thick batter (like pancake batter). Add more milk if it’s too stiff.

  3. Add the Onions
    Stir in the chopped onions until they are fully coated in the batter.

  4. Heat the Oil
    In a skillet, heat ½ inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.

  5. Fry the Fritters
    Drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil, flattening them slightly. Fry 2–3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.

  6. Drain and Serve
    Remove and place on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with sour cream, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce!
