Sourdough cinnamon rolls

Here’s a delicious sourdough cinnamon rolls recipe for you! These rolls are soft, sweet, and have that perfect tang from the sourdough starter.

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 1 cup sourdough starter (active and bubbly)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (lukewarm)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

For the filling:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, melted butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and eggs.
  • Mix in the flour, salt, and cinnamon. Stir until the dough comes together.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size. Alternatively, you can let it rise in the fridge overnight for a slower, more complex flavor.

2. Make the Filling:

  • In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt until smooth and well combined.

3. Roll Out the Dough:

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 16×12 inches.
  • Spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

4. Shape the Rolls:

  • Starting from the longer edge, tightly roll the dough into a log.
  • Cut the log into 12 even slices and place them into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Cover the rolls with a clean cloth and let them rise for about 30-60 minutes, until puffy.

5. Bake the Rolls:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

6. Prepare the Glaze:

  • While the rolls are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to make the glaze.

7. Glaze and Serve:

  • Once the rolls are done baking, remove them from the oven and drizzle the glaze over the top while they are still warm.
  • Serve and enjoy your soft, fluffy, and tangy sourdough cinnamon rolls!

These cinnamon rolls have a slight tang from the sourdough starter that perfectly balances the sweetness of the filling and glaze. Perfect for a cozy breakfast or dessert!
