Copycat Filet O Fish Recipe

Here’s a copycat recipe for a Filet-O-Fish sandwich, similar to the one from McDonald’s:

Ingredients:

  • For the Fish Fillets:
    • 4 white fish fillets (like cod or haddock)
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper
    • 1/2 tsp paprika
    • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    • 1/2 cup cornmeal (optional, for extra crunch)
    • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk if you don’t have buttermilk)
    • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For the Tartar Sauce:
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
    • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
    • 1 tbsp lemon juice
    • 1 tsp capers (optional)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For Assembling:
    • 4 soft hamburger buns (preferably toasted)
    • 4 slices American cheese (or a mild cheese of your choice)
    • Lettuce (optional, for extra crunch)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tartar Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, pickle relish, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, capers (if using), and salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the ingredients as needed to match your preference. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Fish:
    • Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels.
    • In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, cornmeal (if using), salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
    • Pour the buttermilk into another shallow bowl.
  3. Coat and Fry the Fish:
    • Dip each fish fillet into the buttermilk, allowing any excess liquid to drip off.
    • Then dredge the fish fillet in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to ensure it’s evenly coated.
    • Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.
    • Fry the fish fillets for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
    • Remove the fillets and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  4. Assemble the Sandwich:
    • Lightly toast the hamburger buns.
    • Spread a generous amount of tartar sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Place a fried fish fillet on top of the sauce.
    • Top the fish fillet with a slice of cheese.
    • Add lettuce (optional), and then place the top half of the bun on the sandwich.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve immediately with your favorite sides (fries, chips, or a salad).
