Sausage and Croissant Overnight Casserole Recipe

Posted on January 4, 2025 by admin

Here’s a delicious Sausage and Croissant Overnight Casserole recipe that you can prepare the night before for a hassle-free breakfast!

Ingredients:

  • 6 large croissants (preferably day-old, torn into pieces)
  • 1 lb breakfast sausage (crumbled, you can use pork or turkey)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional, for a tangy kick)
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions or chives (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the casserole dish:
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Cook the sausage:
    • In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned and crumbled (about 5-7 minutes). Drain any excess grease, and set the sausage aside.
  3. Layer the casserole:
    • Tear the croissants into large pieces and spread them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
    • Evenly sprinkle the cooked sausage over the croissant pieces.
    • Add a layer of shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses on top.
  4. Make the egg mixture:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, thyme (if using), and Dijon mustard (if using).
  5. Pour over the casserole:
    • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissant, sausage, and cheese layers, making sure all the croissant pieces are soaked.
  6. Cover and refrigerate:
    • Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the croissants to absorb the egg mixture and flavors.
  7. Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before baking.
    • Bake uncovered for 40-50 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown on top and the eggs are fully set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
  8. Serve:
    • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions or chives, if desired.

Tips:

  • Make-Ahead: This casserole can be prepared the night before and baked the next morning for a stress-free breakfast.
  • Variations: Add vegetables like spinach, bell peppers, or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrients.
  • Make it spicy: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or use spicy sausage for a kick.

Enjoy this comforting, savory breakfast casserole that’s perfect for weekends, holidays, or any time you want an easy and delicious breakfast!
